Student on His Way to School in Creskill Killed When Struck by Semi-Truck

Earlier this month in Cresskill, a middle-school student was struck and killed by a semi-truck as he was riding his bike to school. According to one local news source, the tragic accident took place in the morning hours on Grant Avenue.

Evidently, the driver of the semi-truck was making a left turn onto Grant Avenue when he struck the student, who was riding his bike at the time. The student was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency workers. The cause of death was listed as blunt-force trauma to the head.

A crossing guard who witnessed the accident told reporters that she first noticed the truck because she thought it couldn’t make the turn onto Grant Avenue. Then, she said she heard the truck’s driver screaming “Oh my God! Oh my God!” She then discovered that the young boy had been hit. The same crossing guard told reporters that “it was just a tragic accident” and that “nobody should be blamed.” However, she also told reporters that she had scolded the young boy earlier in the week for riding his bike too fast while on his way to school.

Police are conducting an investigation into the fatal accident and have not yet released the name of the truck driver. Nor have they filed any criminal charges. The trucking company that owns the rig involved in the accident decline to comment on the accident.

Semi-Truck Accidents on Maryland Roads

Most people are used to seeing semi-trucks on the highway, traveling at high speeds in relatively straight lines. However, these large trucks often have occasion to drive on smaller suburban streets as well. These smaller roads can pose a challenge to truck drivers, whose rigs are often large, difficult to maneuver, and hard to see around.

With that said, it is always the truck driver’s duty to ensure that he or she is operating their vehicle with the utmost caution, especially when driving on small rural or suburban roads where children may be present. If a truck driver makes an error in judgment, or fails to see a person on the road and hits them, they may be responsible for any injuries that person sustained.

Filing Suit Against a Negligent Truck Driver

Financial recovery is not automatic for an accident victim in a Maryland truck accident. In order to recover for medical expenses, lost wages, and any pain and suffering sustained in the accident, the victim must file a personal injury claim against the truck’s driver, potentially also naming the trucking company.
